Hot Events - Black History Month

Yes! It is that time of the year, time to look back and reflect on our history, time to see what what we can learn from our history, and most certainly time to appreciate the journey that has brought us to where we are today and perhaps reflect on the future. BLACK HISTORY MONTH. Please see below for a list of events lined up to broaden our knowledge, entertain and inspire us...

1) Starlight Cinema: Celebrating Sidney Poitier Every Wednesday throughout Black History Month (FREE) Celebrate London Borough of Tower Hamlets Black History Month with the finest films of Sidney Poitier. One of Hollywood's most beloved and talented actors, Poitier's prolific career includes groundbreaking performances and politically charged roles. Admire his critically acclaimed performance as the handsome suitor in "Guess who's Coming to Dinner?" or as Virgil Tibbs, police detective, in "In the Heat of the Night. " Every Wednesday in October will offer the opportunity to relax under the stars in the East Wintergarden and enjoy a meal and a movie. Doors 7:00pm, screenings start 7:30pm East Wintergarden, Bank Street, Canary Wharf Admission Free.

African Film Festival, 11 October 2007 to 14 October 2007
A season celebrating FESPACO, Africa's biggest film festival (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso) with film screenings, Q&A's with directors and live storytelling. Institut Francais, 17 Queensbury Place, South Kensington SW7 2DT. Telephone 020 7073 1350.


3) Celebrating Africa, 14 October 2007 (FREE) Enjoy showcase performances by African cultural groups and artists from Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa, a film screening of `The Story of Saharawis', toy-making workshops and African inspired T-shirt printing. Plus film and a round table discussion on children and modern day slavery. In collaboration with Celebrating Africa. Suitable for families.

4) Film screening: `Guilty or Innocent of Using the N Word', Wednesday 17 October 2007 (FREE)This award winning documentary explores questions and issues around the derogatory 'N' word. It breaks down the word chronologically from its first use in history up to Hip-Hop's influence on its acceptance and commercialisation. The film will be introduced by the director Bhavna Malkani and followed by a Q&A session. Central Library, Lecture Theatre, Phillimore WalkW8 7RX.

5) Black Music: the Mission and the Message – Free concerts at City Hall
A series of intimate concerts exploring the historical development, contribution and impact of various genres of black music: rap, reggae, jazz, gospel, spoken word. 6) Emergence-See! Featuring slam poetry, multi-character transformation and song, Daniel Beaty portrays an amazing cast of over 40 characters who collide in an urgent, witty and moving exploration of what it means to be free.Written and performed by Daniel Beaty @ RIVERSIDE STUDIOS, STUDIO 2, Crisp RoadHammersmith London W6 9RL. Emergence-See! will run at Riverside Studios from October 10 - November 2.

Winners 2... The Rise & Rise of Black British Entrepreneurs 30 Oct:The British Library on Oct 30, will mark Black History Month by hosting a celebration of the contribution of Black British ENtrepreneurs in the UK today. Guest speakers will include: Kanya King, founder of the MOBO awards; Levi Roots, singer and creator of Reggae Reggae Sauce; Dutton Adebayo journalist and founder of The XPress 'best-selling' book publishers; and Sam Gyimah, serial entrepreneur and former winner of the CBI Real Business Entrepreneur of the Future award. "The event will be an opportunity for you to field questions to the panel, network, make contacts ...and share / gain inspiration".
